Florida Tech’s 2008 Computer Science Distinguished
Speaker Lecture. Gene Spafford, widely known for work in
information security and privacy, presents “The Value in
Questioning What You Think You Know.” 12:00pm - 1:30pm in
the F.W. Olin Engineering Building Auditorium, Room 118EC of
the Florida Tech campus. Free and open to the public. Spafford
surveys some historical elements that have led to current system
design and he offers a few examples of how re-examining computing
and security technology might generate some new

Melbourne Main Street’s family-friendly FRIDAY FEST

Palm Bay Christian Church hosts their Hoops For Hope, A
40 Days of Community Service Project. 12:00pm - 4:00pm.
This year’s event includes games, prizes, music, food, bounce
houses, a dunk tank, pony rides, face painting and much more.All
proceeds raised will be donated to local Easter Seals Services to

Sixth Annual “Have a Heart – Adopt a Shelter Pet. Animal
Guardians of Brevard, a local non-profit organization, and the
Brevard County North and South Animal Care and Adoption
Centers (NACC and SACC) are co-sponsoring the Sixth Annual
“Have a Heart – Adopt a Shelter Pet” events. These special pet
adoption events celebrate Valentines Day and the human – pet
bond. 11:00am - 4:00pm. Free identification microchips available
for all animals adopted from this event at the South shelter. There
are reduced adoption fees, and refreshments available. Come and
save a homeless animal, and find a friend for life. The South shelter

2nd Annual Sweetheart Dance. Boys and girls 1st through 5th
grades are invited with their dates (i.e. mom, dad, grandma or

for all couples, performance by Magic Dove Magic Shop, performance

“Orphan Trains”. This history lecture by Patti Kirk is scheduled
during the meeting of the Brevard Genealogical Society. In 1856,
immigrants were pouring into the port of New York. Patti tells the
fascinating story of homeless children in New York, their journey
of survival, and the families who took them into their homes.

Florida College Goal Sunday Weekend. Students who hope
to attend college will be given a clear path to federal cash assistance
during this free statewide event. Financial experts help college-
bound students and their families complete the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) 9:00am – 12:00pm at
the Brevard Community College Palm Bay Campus, 250
Community College Parkway. The FAFSA helps students access billions
in federal funds available for college. Florida College Goal
Sunday is a free event. Financial aid assistance will be available in

White Elephant Auction. The Military Affairs Council of the
Cocoa Beach Area Chamber of Commerce hosts its White
Elephant Auction beginning at 6:00pm at the Comfort Inn & Suite
Resort, 3901 N. Atlantic Avenue, Cocoa Beach. This fund-raising
event will benefit the Military Affairs Council of Florida’s Space
Coast. During the event, there are three is a silent auction a live
auction and a Chinese auction. The cost to attend the event is
$5/person, along with one donated item for either of the auctions.

Cocoa Beach Public Library’s Annual Friends of the
Library Author Luncheon featuring longtime NBC Space
Correspondent and author Jay Barbree at the Cocoa Beach
Holiday Inn at 11:30am. Cost is $20. Tickets must be purchased
by February 18 at the library. Jay will discuss, sign and sell his new
book Live from Cape Canaveral, and reminisce about his days as
a reporter who “lived among the astronauts, socialized with them
and watched as they strapped themselves into small metal containers
perched atop unimaginable explosion force”. Barbree is
the only reporter who has covered every mission flown by astronauts,
and offers an engaging, behind-the-scenes account of
America’s 50 years in space. Copies of the book will be available
for $26.95.

Second International Festival. Florida Tech Campus, Panther
Plaza. 12:00pm – 6:00pm. The free event highlights a 4:00pm
concert in the Jazz at the Panthereum series, featuring the DJ
Daniel Trio. Other music and dancers are Javier Molinares and the
Valle Cumbia de Colombia dancers; an Andean wind ensemble;
folk dancing by Saudi Arabian, Indian and Caribbean students;
L’Ahavat Tzion Israel Folk Dance; City of Melbourne Pipes &
Drums; Sevillanas Flamenco; and Recuerdos de mi Panama traditional
folk dancers. Local vendors sell ethnic food specialties and
students offer handmade jewelry and traditional artifacts for sale.
Children enjoy carnival-type games and activities.
WOOFSTOCK Festival & Reunion. Greyhound Pets of America
a non-profit organization dedicated to the placement of retired
racing greyhounds into loving homes hosts a WOOFSTOCK
Festival & Reunion. 11:00am - 3:00pm. Location is Wickham Park
Main Pavilion, 3601 N. Wickham Road in Melbourne. The event
features the “Gilley Greyhound Dancing Drill Team”, Greyhound
Pet Contests, music, a bake sale, a used book sale, a silent auction,
raffles, vendors with Greyhound/Canine merchandise and
Greyhound candidates for adoption. Refreshments for sale.
Proceeds of the event will help support the organization’s mission

its free comprehensive English for Speakers of Other
Languages classes to the Cocoa campus, 1519 Clearlake Road.
The program, which is in partnership with the Brevard Public

public. Testing determines whether students are an ESOL level 4,
5, 6 or Academic Skills, the highest level achievable. Tests are

new 2100 square foot addition on the north side of the library.
Tour the new facility, which includes a used book sale room, computer

area to house DVD’s. Enjoy special occasion music played
on violin and guitar by Lynn and Joseph Gray, as well as refreshments
served by the Friends. The library extension was funded
entirely by private donations generously provide by the Friends of
Cocoa Beach Library.

Hollis. Find out what it is truly like in an alien world that is just
next door. Hollis was Chief Pilot of the submersible “Alvin”, and
the Expedition Leader of the first visit to the Titanic. He will share
some of his deep sea adventures on the bottom of the ocean,
including the first visit to the Titanic, in a PowerPoint presentation.

Rings of Allah and Behold, an Ashen Horse, in the Jane von Thron
Room. Weapons expert and author, Boyland’s storyline explores
Al-Qaeda’splot to destroy the U.S., triggering the clash of civilizations
building for 1400 years. Only one will survive.

Thru 5/20, 1 PM – 1:45 PM, Hatha Yoga for Seniors with Emily
Hain, a Certified Yoga Instructor. No experience or special equipment
is necessary; chairs will be used for support. Cost is $2/
class. Learn how yoga can help keep you more healthy and active.
This 45 minute class is designed to warm up the body, improve
your balance and maintain strength and flexibility in a relaxing
and non-competitive style.

is $5/session. This is a safe, fun, relaxing and non-competitive

Polly Helm. An easy does it aerobics with a warm up and cool
down 20 minutes long, featuring a chair based workout intended

T’ai Chi is a unique system of moving meditation with exercise
emphasizing legs and posture, and meditation of mind and
